The new Sri Lankan Ambassador, His Excellency Major General (Retd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B Thoradeniya has assured Sri Lanka’s continued support, and cooperation, to the Maldives. The newly​(18 February 2016​)​ Appointed High Commissioner made this remark at the meeting held following the presentation of his credentials to President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.At the ceremony held18 February 2016 at the President’s Office, President Yameen congratulated the Sri Lankan High Commissioner on the commencement of his term and welcomed him to the Maldives. The High Commissioner said that it was an honour and privilege to serve as the High Commissioner to the Maldives. Discussions at the meeting that followed were focused on the long existing bilateral relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, and ways to further strengthen the good relations. President Yameen noted the geographical proximity of the two countries, and pointed out that ensuring the stability and safety of each country was vital for the overall safety of the South Asian region. The President and the Sri Lankan High Commissioner also spoke on the threat of global terrorism and the importance of all countries working together to combat the issue. President Yameen was accompanied at the meeting by Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Dunya Maumoon and Under Secretary at the President’s Office Mr. Mohamed Naseer.
His Excellency Major General (Rtd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B.Thoradeniya
His Excellency Major General (Rtd) B.R.W.M.R.A.B.Thoradeniya USP assumed duties as the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Maldives. Born as the second son to the late Lieutenant Colonel S.B. Thoradeniya and Mrs C. Thoradeniya, he is a proud product of Maliyadeva College Kurunegala who excelled in both cricket and rugby. He captained the school first XI cricket team and was awarded school colours. He was appointed Head Prefect in 1974 and won the Gold medal for the most outstanding student in 1975. Following his father's footsteps young Asoka joined the 9th Officer Cadet intake of Sri Lanka ARMY in 1976 and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant of Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police. During his illustrious Military career spanning for over 3 decades he has served in many parts of the country and held several significant appointments. Commanding officer 1st Battalion SLCMP, Commanding officer 2nd Battalion SLCMP, 1st Commanding officer of the Special Investigation Unit and Provost Marshal were few in his career ladder. He was promoted to the Rank of Major General in 2006. He was the Colonel Commandant of the military police regiment from 2004.01.28 to 2008.12.08. During the 3rd Elam war he played a key role overseeing Military Logistics as the Master General Ordnance. Soon after his retirement in 2008.12.08 he took over duties as the Chairman & Managing Directorr of Sri Lanka Petroleum Co-operation.Major General Asoka Thoradeniya is happily married to Dr. W.B.M. Thoradeniya and blessed with a son and a daughter.
